Back with a reduced crew

We've returned from our winter on dry land somewhat later than originally planned. We did try briefly a few months ago but decided that it would all be too much for Vera to cope with. Sadly, we've now been without her for about a month, as at the grand age of 15 1/2 her Arthritis made it impossible for her to go on. It's just not the same without her.

Whilst discovering that V couldn't cope any more, we also discovered that we had a severe problem with our diesel. We broke down 3 times within a mile of leaving the marina, and only managed to get back by changing the fuel filters umpteen times. After talking to a few people & doing some research on the net, we decided to get the diesel polished to get rid of the Diesel Bug which we suspected was responsible for our problem. It wasn't cheap (over £200) but it was worth it to find out what was going on in the tank. It turned out that we did have Diesel Bug, but that wasn't as bad as we'd expected. The main problem was water in the tank. The diesel polisher from Grand Union Diesel Services found far more water in the tank than he would expect from condensation alone. He suspected water may be getting in through the diesel cap as the O-ring didn't seem to fit properly. Then when Simon removed the actual diesel filler fitting, he found that there was very little sealant between the deck & the fitting. Now with a new O-ring & properly sealed filler fitting we're hoping that we've cured the problem.

We've been here since Tuesday evening, but due to the howling gales & lashing rain, we've yet to leave the marina. According to the forecast it's looking better tomorrow, so we're hoping to take Muriel for a run up to Loughborough & back to see if we can make it without breaking down. Fingers crossed. Then it's off down the Soar and onto the Trent & Mersey for a couple of months.

  1. So sorry to here your sad news. Looking at the picture of Vera brought back memories of Judy, our old lab, who we sadly lost to back problems last August. It takes a long time to get over the loss of a faithful friend, but it does get easier as the months go by and one day you will be able to look at photo's of her without feeling sad.

Hope you have a good cruising season and maybe one day we will meet.

Thanks for that. We miss her like mad but console ourselves with the fact that she had a long & very happy life.
We did actually have a brief chat, not long after you lost Judy. You were moored up in Alrewas & were fitting a solar panel when we walked Vera passed on the towpath. Hopefully we'll bump into you again....although not literally I hope!

  3. Hi Sue and Simon, So sorry to hear your sad news, it must be very difficult to get used to life without her. We have a cocker spaniel at 14.5, and we know wont go on forever and its difficult to contemplate when the time comes. Hope you can remember all the happy times. Best Wishes James and Doug

Thanks for visiting. We've just been reading your blog & think Oscar looks fantastic....the Spaniel version of Vera! We hope he's OK after his unplanned swim today. Vera did the same last year & frightened us half to death, although I think she actually enjoyed it!

  4. Hi guys

This is my first venture onto your blog so I can keep tracks on you.
Just read that V is no longer with you? I know how much she menat to you. I bet Jack is pleased to have her as play mate now.

When the heck did you you take on an extra from the Lord of the Rings then? That great tall thing with straggly hair? Does it have a name? How can it see through those tussled locks across it face? For one moment I though it might be Simon, but, but, surely not!

I often think of you guys. I trust you are enjoying the next chapter in life. By the way what a diesel bug, is there medicine for that? Carl :0)

  5. Hello! Great that you've dropped in for a visit!! Yes, unfortunately we lost V back at the start of May. We still haven't got used to not having her here. I'm sure you're right & that Jack & Vera are terrorising a heavenly cloud, with a bit of help from Liam!

We've been back in Devon for a few weeks but will be heading back to M next week for another adventure. Wales, here we come!

The 'big hair' is a novelty that is wearing off! I'm not sure which of us looks shaggier!

Hopefully the diesel bug under control now. Fingers crossed! It's actually in all fuel, living on the surface between water & diesel & is becoming more common because of modern eco friendly fuel

I hope you enjoy following our travels....if you're ever in the neighbourhood the kettle is always on!

PS Hope you're getting plenty of use out of the mobile 'shed'!
